On a visit to India, Dr. Orin Levine of Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation saw the impact of eVIN, an important tool to modernize and strengthen India’s vaccine logistics systems. eVIN is an electronic, real-time monitoring system that helps healthcare officials ensure adequate supply of vaccines to every child in need, being rolled out in 12 states in the country.

India aims to immunize 27 million new children each year. This enormous effort depends on ensuring a consistent supply of vaccines, stored at recommended temperatures, right from the manufacturer down to the mother and child. In partnership with GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, UNDP is providing support to help the Government of India reach its goal through an innovative electronic Vaccine Intelligence Network (eVIN) that digitalizes entire vaccine stocks and tracks their movement. In this video, nurses in Jaipur, India discuss the positive impact eVIN has had on their everyday administrative duties.

You've walked for several hours to get your baby vaccinated. But the clinic has run out of vaccines -- or the healthworker hasn't turned up because his motorcycle broke. These problems are typical along the last mile or so of a vaccine's journey from factory to child in Africa. In this film we hear how Riders for Health are tackling the transport problem. Up to one-third of the world's population has limited access to affordable, quality medicines. Chris Wright has been working in international development for over 20 years and has been with John Snow, Inc. (JSI) since 2002, working to address this problem. He focuses on public health supply chain management to improve access to medicines, contraceptives, and vaccines, optimizing supply chains, strengthening logistics MIS and data transparency, and developing human capacity for supply chain management in resource-limited countries.

As Deputy Country Director for Systems Strengthening in Tanzania from 2010--2012 and in Nigeria 2008--2010, he oversaw a broad portfolio of technical assistance activities to strengthen health commodity supply chains in the public sector. These included support to the HIV, laboratory, and TB commodity supply chains, and capacity building for the Tanzania Medical Stores Department (MSD) and the Nigerian Federal Central Medical Store, and other health workers involved in managing health commodities. Wright also oversaw the implementation of a new Enterprise Resource Planning system for MSD in Tanzania, and conceived and led initial development for an innovative electronic logistics management information system (eLMIS). Wright has recently taken a keen interest in opportunities to better integrate vaccines and cold chain logistics into other public health supply chain systems. He has worked in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East.

Prior to his career in public health, Wright developed and produced creative communication media and live marketing and product demonstration events for clients in the high tech sector. This evolved out of a decade of professional theater experience first as a technician, then as a writer, performer, director and producer of social and political satire reviews and improvisational comedy. Wright lives with his wife and two sons on the Hood Canal.

Forecasting is a critical supply chain activity that links information on services and commodities from the facility level with program policies and plans at the national level, and is then used to inform higher level decision making on the financing and procurement of commodities. Forecasting is a complex activity in that it involves using hard data to make mathematic calculations, but it also involves using contextual clues to make judgments and predictions. The dual use of both "art and science" in the forecasting process is the main focus of this video. Umit Kartoglu presents the critical aspect of exploitation of stability data to reach the unreached through overview of studies taking vaccines beyond the 8 deg C, all published in peer-review journals as well as a new concept of cool water packs by the WHO and Vaccine Vial Monitors. As he indicates that vaccines have become more stable and there is a clear prospect of increased or even complete heat stability, and concludes that in these circumstances the dogmatic approach to the cold chain causes resources to be wasted and places unnecessary restrictions on field operations.
