PHISICC FINAL WORKHOP: RESEARCH FINDINGS AND IMPLICATIONS
PHISICC (Paper-based Health Information Systems in Comprehensive Care) is a research programme to address the question: what are the effects of an innovative suite of paper-based tools, implemented in remote, rural, primary health care settings, on health outcomes, data quality, data use and the perceptions of health workers and clients?
The project ran from 2016 to 2021 in Côte d’Ivoire, Mozambique and Nigeria, and is funded by the BMGF. In six work streams: we have synthesised the global evidence on health information systems; we have characterised the health information systems in the three countries, using a Human Centred Design approach; we have designed a suite of recording and reporting tools for antenatal care, delivery, postnatal care, vaccination, sick child, general consultation, tuberculosis and HIV (in three languages); and we have tested the tools using randomised controlled trials, comparing 35 health facilities with the new tools with another set of 35 health facilities with the usual tools. In a subset of additional health facilities using the PHISICC tools, we performed qualitative research to understand how the tools were used and perceived.
On the 7th and 8th of December 2021, in Abuja, we are holding a partners and stakeholders workshop with the three countries in order to reach a common interpretation of findings and to discuss the implications.
