The issues raised by Andrew are very relevant and call for much reflexion
on the subject. It is a fact, that we have a tool to facilitate our work
and allow us to make more sensible choices regarding equipment.
Unfortunately, the problems experienced with some equipment on the field
have not been documented.
As of 2002 in Burkina Faso, we have recorded verbal complaints regarding
the refrigerator RCW 50EG/CF (Blue) and concerning its appropriate
temperature of preservation of vaccines and its capacity for freezing a
sufficient number of ice packs for immunization activities in a health
centre. However none of these complaints has been followed-up with a
written documentation to allow a clear analysis of the problem and refer it
to the proper authority.
I think that these questions will help to launch the discussion again,
because while it is true that PIS equipments are approved by WHO and
UNICEF, it is only the field users who can provide information in writing
about major manufacturing defects (if they exist). I am afraid that verbal
and isolated complaints will not solve problems of such magnitude!
