POST 00962E : VVM USE / INDONESIA Follow-up on Post 00960E 12 August 2006 _____________________________________ This posting contains two contributions. The first comes from Vijay Kiran (mailto:[email protected]) from India and the second originally in French from Bibata Pare (mailto:[email protected]) from Burkina Faso. _____________________________________ Thanks for valuable information. Vaccine wastage is a huge issue in India. The ambient temperatures in different areas in India vary from 2 to 50 degrees centigrade in different seasons. Low voltage and frequent power cuts in rural India also warrant use of VVM on all the vaccines . Though the MYP document of India commits to the multidose open vial policy of WHO, one of the constraints is lack of VVM on the vaccines except on OPV and Hep-B in some batches. I request Anton to also give information on following issues. 1. What is the cost of VVM 2 and VVM 30? 2. Which VVM is to be used in Measles and BCG? 3. Indonesia was trying to use chilled water packs in the vaccine carriers. Can you share the results? 4. What is the status of the vaccine stabilization project? I just wanted to supplement for Technet members that the VVM used in case of OPV is VVM2, where as the one used in DPT, DT, TT and Hep-B is VVM 30. Thanks Dr. Vijaya Kiran Country Representative, IMMUNIZATIONbasics India. -------------------------------- This is really an instructive experience that of Indonesia with VVMs! It shows one more time the importance of VVM. However, the only condition is that users know its correct interpretation and when to use it. Up to now there are many health workers who do not know the VVM, although it is found on almost all vaccines vials they use on a daily basis. Therefore let's emphasize training of vaccines users in the field in order to draw maximum benefit from the VVM!!! Many thanks to Vanda Moniaga and Anton Widjaya for sharing their rich experience.
