POST 01175E : VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO VIRUS 22 October 2007 _______________________________________ We wish to draw your attention to the Weekly Epidemiological Report of 28 September 2007 that featured a "Global update on vaccine-derived polioviruses, January 2006 - August 2007" Since 2000, increasing evidence has affirmed the need for a comprehensive strategy to reduce and manage the risk of polio cases and polio outbreaks caused by vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs), particularly following the interruption of transmission of wild poliovirus (WPV) globally. Central to that strategy is a thorough understanding of VDPVs, especially their capacity (i) to cause polio outbreaks in areas with low rates of coverage with oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV) and (ii) to replicate for prolonged periods in some immunodeficient individuals with defects in antibody production. This report updates the summary on VDPVs previously published, with a description of VDPVs detected in 2006 and 2007. ______________________________________________________________________________ All members of the TechNet21 e-Forum are invited to send comments on any posting or to use the forum to raise a new discussion or request technical information in relation to immunization services.
