The TechNet-21.org website is being updated to make it more effective and easier to use. The TechNet Redesign Project, initiated in July 2013 under new management, will release monthly updates to the website and forum over the next 12 months. The first update is expected to be launched in November, with two more planned before the end of the year. “We’re really excited about these improvements to TechNet,” explained Patrick Lydon, manager of TechNet at the World Health Organization. “The new site is not just easier on the eye but also easier to use, even on a mobile phone or tablet device. And many of the problems TechNet users have encountered in the past—such as problems logging in or finding documents using the search tool—have now been addressed.” Other improvements have also been made. A new area of the website, known as the ICT Toolkit, will help public health managers to plan for the implementation of information and communications technology (ICT) in health information systems. It is based on a document entitled Planning an information systems project: A toolkit for public health managers that was created by project Optimize, a collaboration between PATH and WHO to strengthen immunization supply chains. http://www.technet-21.org/images/ICT_Toolkit_small.jpg A version of the ICT Toolkit will shortly be released online. Jan Grevendonk, co-author of the ICT Toolkit, explains the motivation for creating an online version of the document: “We wanted to take the PDF and turn it into something dynamic and interactive, a place for public health managers to share experiences and learn from each other. Hopefully this will help to stimulate more in-depth discussion within the immunization community about ICT project planning.” Another useful resource on the new site will be the Project Optimize resources page, which will list in a single place every document published by the PATH-WHO collaboration. The list—which runs to almost one hundred entries—is a treasure trove of information on the latest developments in immunization supply chain innovation. Highlights include links to the seven new YouTube videos on immunization information systems, resources from the Optimize interactive exhibit, as well as evidence briefs, country reports and other technical material. These aren't the only changes being made. “Our focus has always been on making relevant content accessible to the widest possible audience,” explains Padmini Menon, moderator of the TechNet-21 website. “In keeping with this goal, we’ve introduced a useful feature that enables you to instantly translate content on any page from English into any of the five other official UN languages— Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian and Spanish.” The navigation on the site has also been simplified, enabling users to quickly find what they are looking for. Further updates are planned over the coming months, and a survey will be sent to all TechNet-21 users to gather their opinions on changes to the website, as well as ask them what other improvements they would like to see made.
