Thank you Nahad Sadr-Azodi for sharing this information with TechNet21 readers. The World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, in cooperation with United Nations Children’s Fund, is launching the inaugural Vaccination Week in the Eastern Mediterranean Region initiative during the week of 24-30 April 2010. Vaccination Week is an annual region-wide initiative celebrating and promoting immunization through advocacy, education and communication activities. We are joining the WHO Regions of the Americas and Europe, and their nearly 100 participating countries in an effort towards establishing a Global Vaccination Week possibly in 2011. In this connection, the Regional Office is coordinating and providing the necessary technical support to facilitate the planning, implementation and evaluation of this initiative. Following a Briefing on Vaccination Week for the Immunization Managers and partners in October 2009, the Regional Office finalized and distributed the Regional Framework and Guide for the 2010 Vaccination Week. In addition, the Regional Director has formally communicated with ministers of health, encouraging some level of participation in or alignment of national activities with the inaugural Vaccination Week initiative. Currently 16 (73%) Member States in the region have expressed interest in joining this initiative. Next steps for the Regional Office include designing promotional materials, mobilizing media and resources, and preparing for a regional launching ceremony.
