Dear friends, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is very pleased to present the Cold Chain Equipment ‘Technology Guide’, to support the appropriate selection of modern, efficient and reliable technologies. Download the guide here.

Identifying the most appropriate equipment choices for each health facility is key to help ensure more facilities have adequate cold chain capacity, and that more facilities also have higher performing equipment that stays functional for longer periods of time. This in turn will help increase access to immunisation as well as greater vaccine safety and potency, and contribute to improvements in immunisation coverage and equity.

Developed by technical assistance providers, the Technology Guide offers comprehensive and regularly up-dated information on cold chain equipment and technologies and how to choose the solutions that meet the needs of each health facility. The Technology Guide covers the range of optimised on-grid and off-grid refrigerators and freezers. It also covers other new technologies such as new passive cooling devices and temperature monitoring solutions. The Guide provides clear advice and structured approach to CCE decision-making is intended in particular for use in health facilities and at lower levels of the cold chain.

The Technology Guide is also available as part of the TechNet ‘Cold Chain Equipment Management - Technical Resources’ page here.

The Technology Guide also explains which devices comply with the requirements of the recently launched Gavi Cold Chain Equipment Optimisation Platform. Platform eligible equipment and technologies include innovation that has been achieved via quality assurance provided by WHO Performance, Quality and Safety (PQS) specifications and additionally establishing target product profiles (TPPs) designed to ensure manufacturers also bring the next generation of equipment needed by countries. Click here for more information on the Platform, which is a new form of support to countries to improve access to appropriate and high-performing cold chain equipment.

I also find the guide very useful, there are a few points I would like to make.

  • Why do we need to choose equipment ment for extended operating temperature for places where it is not needed. Don't buy a Mercedes if you can do with a Beattle
  • Most of the vaccines will at some stage end up in a cold box or vaccine carrier, utmost care has been taken to ensure that the vaccines are not stored at temperatures below +2C, the whole way through the cold chain. Some hours in a non freeze protected vaccine carrier will easily ensure that the, so far well protected vaccines will freeze. A PATH study from Indonisia shows that 50% of the vaccines Hep. B. were frozen duringTransport to district. SourceBulletin of the World Health Organization 2004;82:99-105

Dear Hamadou,

When I look at the new WHO PQS 2016, there is a wide range of new products in the catalogue. Will they be included in the CCEOP guide? Secondly is there a window country’s can send feedback in regards to equipment previously procured ?

Thanks

Douglas

I reviewed the section on temperature monitoring in the CCE Optimazation Platform – Technology Guide and notice that this has not been updated for some time and now with even more emphasis on this aspect of vaccine management I would expect to see more details of the equipment available.  Far be it from me to make a commercial note but the Remonsys MULTiLOG2 for central vaccine store monitoring could do with a mention!

Best regards

Hi Hamadou,

Thanks for sharing the technology guide. In India, in the public secotor thes equipments are available. Private sector is catering vaccination services for 10 to 40% of beneficiaries and they have no access to these equipments accept the passive ones.

To address this issue, we have designed and developed vaccine safe ranging from 7 L to 70 L which are in use by very limited pediatricians in varous districts of Karnataka, one in KVG Medical college.

We wish to share this for the benefit of private sector and the vaccinees of elite group.

best regards

Holla

Hi Hamadou, and thanks for sharing. This Technology Guide is an impressive achievement and will no doubt be very useful for countries applying for support through the Cold Chain Equipment Optimisation platform. I suspect it will also be useful to anyone looking to identify the most appropriate cold chain technology for their needs, most especially at lower levels of the cold chain.

I like the way that the guide complements and augments existing resources in this area, in particular, the PQS Catalogue, the UNICEF Cold Chain Support Package, and the recent WHO-UNICEF solar guidance document, which covers some of the same ground. I particularly like the task-oriented and step-based structure of the document, which breaks things down into easily-digestible chunks. The graphics support this nicely, too, and the "device selection" examples make it appear much more "real-world".

I was slightly surprised that some technologies and products at very early stages of development (i.e. not prequalified) are listed in the guide. Hopefully this won't cause confusion.

Have you considered making an online version of the guide available? The "categorisation questions" section, in particular, might work nicely as a set of simple choices, for example using HTML dropdown lists. The main benefit of doing this would be to enable people to run through the decision tree very quickly and see the different outcomes their responses might have on the cold chain equipment that is most appropriate.

Dear Hamadou

First I like to introduce myself, I am Claus Cording working as Innovation Manager at Vestfrost Solutions where I am dedicated to work within our CCE range of vaccine refrigerators and freezers.

I went through your updated GAVI Equipment Optimization platform, that is a brilliant tool and reference book, but I see some of the information in regards to two of our appliances VLS024 + VLS064RF mentioned is not updated.

For your information, those appliances we have already got PQS approved, code E003/069 + E003/070 as per attached certificates.

How often you expect to update the optimization platform?

Best regards
