Pneumonia & Diarrhea Progress Report, 2017

Each year, IVAC prepares the Pneumonia and Diarrhea Progress Report and publishes it for World Pneumonia Day on November 12. The report evaluates the annual progress made in prevention and control of pneumonia and diarrhea by scoring the top 15 highest burden countries - those with the greatest number of under-5 pneumonia and diarrhea deaths - on their implementation of 10 high-impact interventions outlined in the integrated Global Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Pneumonia and Diarrhea (GAPPD). The 10 interventions scored include vaccination, exclusive breastfeeding, access to care, and use of antibiotics, oral rehydration solution, and zinc to treat the illnesses. These measures are known to prevent childhood deaths due to pneumonia and diarrhea and could help achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal target of reducing under-5 mortality to at least 25 per 1,000 live births by 2030.
