Utilizing a statewide immunization information system and GIS mapping software to determine pockets of need

BACKGROUND:

One of the CDC\'s immunization program priorities is to utilize statewide immunization registries along with the GIS software to identify pockets of need, and determine solutions to improve statewide immunization rates. South Dakota\'s Immunization Information System (SDIIS) includes a statistical function that produces statewide immunization coverage rates. The results produced from this assessment function are utilized with GIS to map immunization rates and determine pockets of need.

SETTING:

All childhood immunization providers in South Dakota, including some IHS facilities.

POPULATION:

The SDIIS is currently used to enter all childhood immunizations given in South Dakota.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Public Health Professionals will be provided a brief description of the SDIIS assessment function utilized with the GIS software. An example of the the coverage report as well as statewide maps produced with the GIS software will be also be discussed. Participants will be challenged to determine whether registries in their jurisdictions can be used similarly.

RESULTS/LESSONS LEARNED:

The SDIIS assessment function used in combination with the GIS software is a very valuable tool in identifying low immunization rates and determining pockets of need. This process is very beneficial at the state level in identifying problems and recommending interventions and solutions to increase immunization rates in South Dakota due to:

• Clinic Size – immunization rates are drastically affected by low client base

• Data Entry –turn over has a huge effect, as well as timely data entry

• Not giving vaccines on time/Missed opportunites

• Patient Status – must be kept current at the local level
