This WHO digital course used the Scholar Approach, developed by the University of Illinois College of Education and the Geneva Learning Foundation to support effective learning for global health and humanitarian work. This approach combines community of practice, knowledge co-construction, and peer review to support project-based learning. It was first piloted in 2016 by WHO to support country-level action planning based on the Global Routine Immunization Strategies and Practices (GRISP) guidelines.

The GRISP Scholar course will be offered in French in the first quarter of 2018.

Recognizing the need to strengthen epidemiological surveillance of diseases at a community level, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded the MEASURE Evaluation project together with the Ministry of Health in Côte d’Ivoire, and embarked on implementing a community-based early warning system for epidemic-prone diseases such as the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD), using mobile phone alerts linked to the District Health Information System v2 (DHIS2) platform. In this webinar, listen to our speaker from the Cote-d’Ivoire as he shares Côte d’Ivoire’s experience with implementing a disease surveillance system with community health workers at the center to provide an Early Warning System (EWS) using SMS alerts to the different levels of the health reporting pyramid. The speaker will discuss some of the critical issues around the integration of the EWS module within the DHIS2 and the importance of utilizing community-level personnel for effective detection of epidemic outbreaks for rapid response. The presenter will also highlight the key challenges, lessons learned in the implementation process and opportunities for improvement of the surveillance system. This presentation should be of interest to data management, health management information system, and primary health care specialists with a keen interest in integration and innovative use of data management systems.

The theme for this year’s Forum—The Evolving Digital Health Landscape: Progress, Achievements, and Remaining Frontiers—captures the spirit of progress made in the past several years to scale digital health systems and also encourages us to look critically at the continued need for innovation, as well as integration, to improve health outcomes in a changing political landscape.

The Global Digital Health Network and PCHA are planning diverse event with engaging sessions to connect government stakeholders, digital health developers, researchers, donors, implementers and field experts from across the globe. The Forum will feature panel presentations, hands-on workshops, poster presentations and the interactive “Appy Hour”. New this year will be TED-style talks, facilitated expert round-table discussions, and digital health labs.

Worldwide, pneumonia takes the lives of more young children than any other disease – more than 100 every hour of every day. The single biggest cause of fatal pneumonia in childhood is preventable with a vaccine. The panel discussion features child health experts, advocates and researchers to discuss the successes, and remaining hurdles, towards achieving full protection against vaccine-preventable pneumonia and other diseases for the world’s most vulnerable children.
