POST 00423E : YELLOW FEVER VACCINATION IN ADULTS WITH HIV OR AIDS 15 February 2002 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Dianne Phillips [mailto:[email protected]] is looking for advice on the administration of yellow fever vaccine to adults with HIV or AIDS: "South Africa is not an endemic yellow fever country, and as such does not immunise children with yellow fever unless traveling to a country where vaccination is needed. We do, however, insist on yellow fever vaccination proof from travelers entering South Africa from an endemic country. This is normally not a problem because the options open to the traveler are to pay for a shot, return to their home country or be taken into custody. Later this year, we are hosting the World Health Summit, and plans are in place to be able to vaccinate all participants from yellow fever endemic countries at the ports of entry to South Africa. If someone refuses on the grounds of HIV or AIDS, or any other medical grounds without proof (HIV/AIDS is not notifiable and many people hide their status because of the stigma attached to these conditions) what are we to do. Can we immunise everyone regardless of their health status? What effect does yellow fever vaccine have on an adult with HIV or AIDS? If it is contraindicated, how will we manage the visitors? We experienced problems previously during the big AIDS conference a while ago when political figures refused immunisation and were allowed into the country without the necessary proof. We would not like this to happen again, so need guidance on how to proceed." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- CONTRIBUTIONS: Contributions to: or use your reply button!
