Health Centers are provided with Ice Lined Refrigerators for keeping the vaccines of one mothh requirement. ILR has 3 baskets, one in the bottom 'A' zone with lower end temperature and 2 upper baskets in zone 'B' at higher end of critically set temperature of 2 to 8 degree centigrade. Since the heat/freeze sensitivity of live attenuated and 'T' series are not the same a "code" is developed to keep different antigens in specific position in the baskets of ILR. Details are attached. This I like to share for critical review and further standardization. Vaccine Storage Code

The history goes that ILRs are coldest in the bottom. This is not the case with VESTFROST (as here) ILRs. They are coldest in the top, the reason for that is that the ice-lining is in the upper part. So, the storage code should be opposite for VESTFROST ILRs. I did temperature monitoring, with data loggers, of this and have the supporting data, I am trying to attach, but it does not work. I can send to your e-mail Technet-ILR.doc

Please outline the problems you are facing with attaching files on the forum so that others can benefit from the discussion too. If you send the document to me I can attach it to the post.

Sir Thanks for the response, Unlike Deep Freezer, the cooling starts from the upper portion where the Ice Lining is provided in the ILR. (The first lot we received around 1990 with waterproof ply-wood sleeve to retain the lining of Icepacks had lining up to the bottom which are still under use.) The present ILR's have one row of Icepacks in the upper portion. The air as it cools first at the upper portion being heavier moves to the bottom (advantageous) and sets up passive circulation to maintain uniform distribution of temperature within the cabinet, sustain regular compression cycle and increase the longevity of the machine. As there are 3 baskets, the 'code' is developed for the optimum utilization of the space because of differential heat/freeze sensitivity and for uniformity. Sir, I have attached the photos of both type to insist the use of present generation ILR. With regards, Holla

Hi Soren, I have seen similar problems of temperature control with chest type refrigerators. That's one of the reasons we make the upright, front opening design. It's much easier to use, gives better temperature control and you don't need to take vaccines out into high temperature air to access stock deeper in the compartment Often, as you say the old chest type suffer badly from pooling of cold air at the bottom of the compartment whilst simultaniously door opening will stir warm air into the top level. The result is that you have air warmer than 8C at the top and colder than 2C at the bottom making it impossible for the control system to know which way to turn - no wonder these units have a reputation for poor temperature control. The other factor that plays a part here is the common practice of mounting the compressors under the refrigerator cabinet. This looks nice and tidy but the compressor and it's components get very hot. This is like putting a fire under a cooking pot - couldn't be designed better for heating the compartment! This might also help to explain why the lower sections of this device are warmer than you'd expect. I'd be very interested to see the data you have - could you send me a copy to me. Thanks Ian
