POST 00704E : GLASS SYRINGES DISPOSAL Follow-up on Posts 00696E and 00700E 8 August 2004 _______________________________ Anil Varshney ([log in to unmask]">mailto:[log in to unmask]) from India proposes a solution for glass syringes disposal. _______________________________ Here is a simple solution, concerning glass syringes of vaccines but comments are welcome 1. separate the plunger and syringes, separate needles 2. wash the syringes with high pressure water hose 3. dry them in open air/ sun 4. crush the glass syringes and plunger if they are of glass 5. use the crushed glass for whatever it can be used eg land fills etc*/ recycled and crushed glass will occupy less volume to store 6. the vaccine remained in them is unlikely to be harmful . Though it sounds primitive but is most practical, cheap and easy and should done at the site of use. Storing, transporting, autoclaving and then using huge incinerators will cost more than the cost of vaccine and in most cases will not be carried out efficiently as it is not the key job concerning healthcare, more than that healthcare staff has lot more to do. I have seen in countries syringes stored in safety boxes for years with filth accumulating.
