Please join us for a webinar on vaccine vial monitor (VVM)-based vaccine management, on the occasion of publishing of “The Book of VVM: Yesterday-today-and-tomorrow” by Umit Kartoglu. The webinar will take place on Tuesday, January 21st at 4pm CET. During the webinar, the presenters will discuss the critical role of VVM in vaccine management policies as well as the VVM shaping the future of the (digitized) cold chain. The presenters will be:

Umit Kartoglu, Co-founder and CEO, Extensio et Progressio, Collonge-Bellerive, Switzerland (author of The Book of VVM)

Debbie Kristensen, Director of Vaccine Technology, Strategy, and Policy / Medical Devices and Health Technologies, PATH, Geneva, Switzerland

Ted Prusik, Co-founder and Senior Vice President, Temptime Corporation, Morris Plains, NJ, USA

For presenter biographies, refer to the attached document.

It is not an overstatement to say that VVM is one of the most important recent innovations in the area of public health, providing health workers with advisable and dependable means of ensuring that the administered vaccine has not been damaged by heat. Amongst all the temperature monitoring devices and tools, VVM is the only one that has dramatically changed the course of vaccine management practices as well as shaped the future of the cold chain. Some critical approaches we have today in vaccine management have only been made possible with the help of VVM, and others have been made more effective.

For a quick review of VVM-induced vaccine management policies and VVM based vaccine management, refer to pages 201 and 245 in The Book of VVM (free download in PDF and ePUB3 formats from http://kartoglu.ch/vvm).

Dear VPPN Member!

Happy New Year! My name is Andrea Papan and I am the new VPPN Community of Practice Manager. I look forward continuing the great work that has taken place over these last three years and to facilitating an inclusive, responsive and dynamic exchange between all VPPN peers of as our community of practice flourishes in this next exciting phase!

We are pleased to announce that The Vaccine Procurement Practitioners Network (VPPN) has joined TechNet-21.org, the global network for immunization professionals. (Note, please bookmark this website.) The VPPN is a Group site within TechNet-21 and remains a private and invitation only site. All the content from the VPPN has been moved over to the new platform.

How to begin using the new VPPN?

  • Your previous VPPN membership has been moved over and your account is now active. There is nothing you need to do.
  • Your email now becomes your login and previous VPPN password is the same for this new site. If you have forgotten your password you, click "Forgot password" under the login and follow the steps. However, if you have any trouble, please feel free to contact me at [email protected].
  • Once logged in, to access the VPPN Group site from the TechNet-21 homepage: click the arrow by your name and profile picture or initials on the very top menu, choose ‘My groups’ in the drop down menu, and select the VPPN.

What are the benefits of this migration for members?

  • As a VPPN member you can access two platforms with one login: the VPPN and TechNet-21
  • In addition to connecting with VPPN peers, you gain access to TechNet-21, a global network of immunization professionals committed to strengthening immunization services by sharing experiences, coordinating activities, and helping to formulate optimal policies. The platform offers an extensive repository with approximately 4000 immunization resources.

How do I learn more?

An official launch and online sharing session will take place on Thursday, 30 January 2020 at 9am CET and all VPPN members are invited to participate. The Zoom Meeting link is at the bottom of this page. The session will include:

  • An introduction to the new VPPN Group site and how to use it,
  • An onboarding to TechNet-21 as both a tool and a way of engaging together as global network of immunization professionals, and
  • An outline of the upcoming knowledge strategy for the VPPN as we join together in this next phase of knowledge sharing, peer learning and collaborative problem solving relating to vaccine procurement!

A warm welcome to everyone as we open up this new space! I encourage you to please take a moment and briefly say hello and re-introduce yourself on the VPPN Discussions forum.

We look forward to seeing you on January 30th

Kind regards,

Andrea

The Moth, the internationally-acclaimed organization dedicated to the art and craft of personal stories told live, is bringing two storytelling workshops to Nairobi, Kenya, in February 2020, in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Through its Global Community Program, The Moth conducts workshops with individuals around the world, elevating stories that highlight world issues, dissolve stereotypes, and bridge social divides. Guided by Moth instructors, workshop participants shape selected life experiences into well-crafted stories, which may then be presented to peers and to the world at large.

These workshops will be offered free of charge, and will be made available to a total of 24 people (12 per workshop). Accommodation, travel, and meals will be provided for all workshop participants. The schedule will be as follows:

Workshop #1:

Monday, February 3rd, 9 AM - 5 PM
Tuesday, February 4th, 9 AM - 5 PM
Wednesday, February 5th, 9 AM - 4 PM
Workshop #2:

Saturday, February 8th, 9 AM - 5 PM
Sunday, February 9th, 9 AM - 5 PM
Monday, February 10th, 9 AM - 4 PM
Participants will arrive in Nairobi on the evening preceding the first day of the workshop, and will depart in the evening of the workshop's final day, or on the following day.

If you participate, you will:

be introduced to principles of personal narrative, developed by The Moth through its work with thousands of storytellers since its launch in 1997;
identify one personal story; and
receive one-on-one coaching to help craft your five-minute story.
Who should apply for this workshop: individuals who identify as people who help develop vaccines, help distribute or set up systems to deliver vaccines, people who have benefitted themselves from vaccines, or people who have family members or loved ones who have benefitted from vaccines. In addition, we strongly encourage advocates working in the areas of immunization to apply, but anyone is welcome to share a story about his/her work towards a world where we no longer fear infectious diseases.

Application Deadline: Applications will be accepted through Friday, November 8th, 6:00 PM EST and participants will be notified soon after that. If you have any questions, please contact us at [email protected]

In July 2019, 644 Scholars from 55 countries pledged to improve immunization outcomes. In this Special Event, Scholars will share their experiences in the Impact Accelerator, a new model for leading change developed by immunization Scholars from over 90 countries.

What is the Accelerator?
The Accelerator is a new system to foster collaborative leadership in ways that can contribute to systemic change.

Scholars who successfully complete a course are convened to use what they learned to achieve impact.

In July 2019, 644 immunization Scholars from 55 countries pledged to improve immunization outcomes.

During the first Impact Accelerator pilot, immunization Scholars self-organized groups in 24  countries –  including priority countries Chad, Cameroon, Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, India and Ethiopia.

Most sought and rapidly secured support from government teams  to ensure their action could contribute to national priorities.

Why did we create the Accelerator?
Some countries are facing complex challenges hindering progress toward the global goals for immunization. New approaches are needed.

Since 2016, immunization Scholars have been turning knowledge into action through the immunization Scholar programme.

In a few countries, Scholars self-initiated informal, motivated groups of professionals operating across agencies, to transform ideas into collaborative project implementation.

Observing these voluntary dynamics, we saw potential for systemic change – and immediately convened Scholars to develop a new system to support this across the network.

Please join the PATH Introducing Digital Immunization information systems: Exchange and Learning from Vietnam (IDEAL-Vietnam) project for a webinar on scaling-up electronic immunization information systems. The webinar will take place on Thursday, February 27th at 1pm CET.

During the webinar the presenters will discuss lessons learned from Vietnam of a successful scale-up of an electronic immunization registry (EIR) from pilot to nationwide application. Successful scale-up is not an easy feat, and the process of moving from small- to large-scale operations in Vietnam was due in part to from-the-start planning, key partnerships, government commitment, and sustained collaboration.

The webinar will highlight key facilitators and barriers, and focus on important partnerships that catalyzed the success of the scale-up process. Government commitment was quintessential to the accomplishments in Vietnam, therefore it is with great excitement that the presenters for this webinar will be:

- Dr. Huyen Dang, Vietnam National Expanded Program on Immunization (NEPI)

- Dr. Nga Nguyen Tuyet, Vietnam Country Director

- Sang Dao Dinh, Vietnam Project Officer.

The format of the webinar will include an informational presentation, an interview with key NEPI and PATH staff members, and followed by a Q&A session. This webinar will present the findings discussed in the IDEAL-Vietnam project’s lessons learned case study that will also be released in February. You can find regularly updated project documents and information on our homepage (https://www.technet-21.org/en/topics/ideal).

European Immunization Week (EIW) promotes the core message that immunization is vital to prevent diseases and protect life. The slogan – Prevent. Protect. Immunize. – carries this message across the Region.

The next EIW will be celebrated on 20–26 April 2020.

The goal of EIW is to increase vaccination coverage by raising awareness of the importance of immunization among parents and caregivers, health care professionals, policy and decision-makers, and the media.

WHO/Europe leads and coordinates EIW, and all Member States in the WHO European Region are invited to take part. Regional and national partners, including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), support implementation. EIW also benefits from high-level support at the national level, including ministers, ambassadors and other distinguished supporters. At the regional level, the initiative has the support of WHO/Europe's Patron, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.
