IDAC Roundup and May Registration

The IIS Data Analyst Collaborative (IDAC) is a discussion-based offering where participants explore topics relevant to IIS data. Held quarterly on the third Thursday of the month from 1 to 2 p.m. ET, each session offers a space for conversation and peer learning. Participation is limited to encourage meaningful dialogue and to give both new and experienced analysts the chance to ask questions and share insights with the community.

Since February 2024, five IDAC sessions have been held. Topics, takeaway notes, and recordings from past sessions are listed below.

The next IDAC session will take place on May 15, 2025, from 1 to 2 p.m. ET. The discussion will focus on data cleansing, including improving demographics, fragmented records, issues with merging records, and the best ways to address “moved or gone elsewhere” (MOGE). To register for the event, follow the link here

IDAC Session Resources:

Session takeaways and recordings are also posted to the IIS Data Analyst Forum (IDAF). IDAF is an online forum where people who work with IIS data can talk, access additional resources, check out publications, and post and answer questions.

Information Requests

  • How is this information updated and maintained?
  • How is this information used? For example, is it used to support patient matching for HEDIS extracts?
  • Do you have lessons learned to share regarding storage and use of Medicaid ID?

Data Viz Tip of the Month

Power BI

There are many ways to show the same data, but some visualizations are better suited than others for the task at hand. Start by thinking about the narrative you want to tell, and choose the chart type that communicates your data most accurately and clearly.

Here are some common options:

  • Pie or donut chart to compare each value’s proportional size against the whole series
  • Column or bar chart to compare the difference between multiple values
  • Line or area chart to see the difference between values
    • Waterfall chart to highlight how individual components contribute to a total change
  • Timeline or time series chart for categories that are based on units of time
  • Network chart for categorical data that has an intricate hierarchy of subcategories

As a best practice, have a colleague review your chart to ensure it’s easy to interpret and tells the story you intend.

Board Spotlight: Getting to Know Laura Barrett

The Board Spotlight provides both AIRA staff and the IIS community the opportunity to learn a little about each AIRA Board member. This month, we’re getting to know Laura Barrett, AIRA Board IIS Director and Immunization Registry Manager at the Kentucky Department for Public Health.

What was your favorite job in high school or college? Or, on the flip side, was there one that you were not fond of?

My favorite job in college was working in the box office of a local theater. Reservations were all made via phone calls, so I spent the days reading and answering phones. The evenings were wild at will call, but I settled into closing and listening to whatever musical was on that evening. I worked there for three summers and enjoyed watching many plays for free.

What’s your favorite dessert?

Baklava.

If you had the opportunity to be on any TV show, which one would you choose and why?

I would probably hate being on a TV show, but if you could put me in the stands sometime as they film Ted Lasso... I could live with that.

If you could invent something to make your life easier, what would it be?

Teleportation.

What’s one thing on your bucket list that you haven’t done yet?

A cruise of the Rhine right before Christmas. I want to go to the Christkindlmärkte.

Could you share a person or experience that had a positive impact on your professional career?

The person who has had the most positive impact on my professional career is my mother. She encouraged my education and in my professional life has always provided sage advice and willing ear. As I grew up, she was a wonderful example of a professional, independent woman. While she is now retired, she had a career that positively impacted the community, and though it was frequently very stressful, she always persevered. As my lifelong role model, she set the bar incredibly high.

What’s one key takeaway you’ve gained from participating in an AIRA workgroup or committee?

I have recently joined the Resource Development Recommendations Workgroup (RDRW), and I am loving the insight into how resource development opportunities are identified and how they are discussed and ranked by members. It has been incredible seeing one of the ways actionable priorities are being set by the community.

Are there any new initiatives or projects your organization is currently working on that you’d be willing to share?

Kentucky is incredibly excited to have our IIS onboarding project manager, Ed Ballestero, presenting on our project to augment our contact information in the Kentucky Immunization Registry (KYIR) at the AIRA National Meeting this year. We have been working to improve the percentage of patients in KYIR with a phone number or e-mail address in hopes to see improved rates of successful access to our public portal. Though we may not see results for a while from the project, Kentucky is elated to have the opportunity to share our results and lessons learned from working with a vendor on attaining this data.
