The Members and Partners meeting agenda is now available! Please join us for the upcoming AIRA Members and Partners meeting on Monday, July 15, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. ET. AIRA Members and Partners quarterly meetings provide important updates from AIRA and partner organizations and are a great way to get a high-level overview of the activities going on within the IIS and immunization community. Members and Partners meetings are held on Zoom.

At our next quarterly Members and Partners meeting, we will have a new partner, CDC's Office of Public Health Data, Surveillance and Technology (OPHDST), share about their work. During this meeting, we will get an overview from OPHDST, focusing on their work with the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA). OPHDST's mission is to optimize timely access, exchange, and integration of public health data while driving efficiency and consolidation of data and technology systems supported by CDC across all levels of public health. OPHDST will plan to attend and provide re-occurring updates during future AIRA Members and Partners calls.

Information Requests

AIRA members can submit and review information requests—a circulation of questions to and answers from the community. To submit an information request to the IIS community, email Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. Vous devez activer le JavaScript pour la visualiser. with “Information Request” in the subject line.

Open Information Requests

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services would like to know if any jurisdictions are open to sharing screenshots of their user interface related to race and ethnicity. Most specifically, if a message with two races or two ethnicities is sent to your system, how does your system map it to the record? How are multiple races or ethnicities displayed on your user interface?

If you are willing to share, please reach out to Sydney Zaldana at Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. June ACIP Meeting Highlights

Background

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met on June 26–28 to discuss the following vaccines: RSV for adults, combination (Vaxelis®), chikungunya, dengue, COVID-19, influenza, pneumococcal, meningococcal, RSV – material/pediatric, and HPV.

Summary of Votes

Below is a summary of the votes that took place.

RSV Vaccines – Adults

  • ACIP recommends adults 75 years of age and older receive a single dose of RSV vaccine.
  • ACIP recommends adults 60–74 years of age who are at increased risk of severe RSV disease receive a single dose of RSV vaccine.
  • Impact on IIS: This represents a narrower cohort of adults who are eligible for RSV vaccine, and IIS will need to be programmed accordingly.

Combined Diphtheria and Tetanus Toxoids and Acellular Pertussis, Inactivated Poliovirus, Haemophilus influenzae Type B Conjugate, and Hepatitis B Vaccine

  • ACIP recommends DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB (Vaxelis®) should be included with PRP-OMP (PedvaxHIB®) in the preferential recommendation for American Indian and Alaska Native infants based on the Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) component.
  • A VFC program resolution was passed for DTaP-IPV-Hib-HepB (Vaxelis®).

COVID-19 Vaccine

Pneumococcal Vaccine

  • ACIP recommends 21-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV21) as an option for adults aged 19 years and older who currently have a recommendation to receive a dose of PCV.

Influenza Vaccine

  • ACIP reaffirms the recommendation for routine annual influenza vaccination of all persons aged 6 months and older who do not have contraindications.
  • ACIP recommends high-dose inactivated (HD-IIV3) and adjuvanted inactivated (aIIV3) influenza vaccines as acceptable options for influenzas vaccination of solid organ transplant recipients aged 18 through 64 years who are on immunosuppressive medication regimens, without a preference over other age-appropriate IIV3s or RIV3.

New AIRA e-Learning Course COMING SOON!

AIRA will be launching a new e-learning course, “HL7 Immunization Update (VXU) Messages,” in August 2024. This on-demand course provides an in-depth review of HL7 v2.5.1 unsolicited vaccination record update (VXU) messages and how they are used to exchange immunization information between immunization information systems (IIS) and other health information systems.

This course is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of the IIS community in using VXU messages to support the interoperability of immunization information between systems, in alignment with the National Implementation Guide. The IIS core competencies most related to this course are interoperability and data quality.

This course is intended for individuals with some prior exposure to concepts related to interoperability and HL7 immunization messaging, particularly those responsible for supporting HL7 v2 interfaces between IIS and other health information systems.

New to HL7 and interoperability? We recommend taking the Public Health Informatics Institute’s introductory training first.

Research reported in this publication was supported by the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory and Disease of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under award number NU38OT000291 under CDC-RFA-OT18-1802 Strengthening Public Health Systems and Services Through National Partnerships to Improve and Protect the Nation’s Health. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of CDC.

In Case You Missed It: Emerging Standards Discovery Session Recording Now Available

On June 24, AIRA hosted a Discovery Session on Emerging Standards. During this Discovery Session, Faisal Reza, CDC, and Nathan Bunker, AIRA, discussed efforts toward advancing and tracking emerging standards, such as FHIR, in immunization information systems.

If you or a staff member missed the live event, don’t fret! The Emerging Standards Discovery Session recording and presentation slides are now available in the AIRA Repository.

New Technical Advisory Bulletin Published

The Standards and Interoperability Steering Committee (SISC) is pleased to announce the publication of a new technical advisory bulletin (TAB) document. This document builds on and further clarifies specifications in the HL7 v2.5.1 Implementation Guide for Immunization Messaging, Release 1.5 and Addendum, October 2018.

TAB Messaging Phone and Email; Telecommunication Use Code and Equipment Type Values” focuses on the representation of patient and next-of-kin phone numbers and email addresses in VXU and QBP messages for the v2.5.1 Implementation Guide for Immunization Messaging.

Key Specifications:

  • Submit the patient's primary phone number in the first sequence of PID-13, QPD-9, or NK1-5 with telecommunication use code from HL70201 and telecommunication equipment type code from HL70202.
  • Submit email addresses using the telecommunication use code “NET” from HL70201.
  • Support telecommunication use codes “PRN” and “NET” from HL70201 and equipment type codes “PH” and “CP” from HL70202.

Fields for Messaging:

  • PID-13 (Phone number – home)
  • QPD-9 (Patient home phone/PID-13: Patient home phone)
  • NK1-5 (Phone number)

This bulletin clarifies messaging for phone types and email addresses using the XTN data type and specifies the required telecommunication use code and equipment type value sets.

Implementers are expected to use TABs to support the development and maintenance of HL7 exchange capabilities and interfaces. Unless otherwise indicated, organizations shall use the TAB specifications to support implementation, as soon as feasible, working with exchange partners as needed to test and/or confirm changes. See the TAB Overview for additional information about these documents.
