Objectives: Improve capacity and commitment of national stakeholders to develop Indonesia National Immunization Strategy 2024 – 2025.

Overview: The National Immunization Strategy (NIS) is a new framework based on the comprehensive Multi-Year Plan (cMYP) and the global Immunization Agenda 2030, aimed at ensuring inclusive immunization. Supported by WHO and UNICEF, Indonesia is transitioning from its cMYP (2020-2024) to the NIS (2025-2029). To kick off this transition, a four-day event was held from April 29 to May 2, 2024, to familiarize stakeholders with the NIS development process and secure their commitment.

Dr. Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, Director General of Disease Prevention and Control at Indonesia's Ministry of Health, highlighted the NIS's significance in his opening remarks. He stressed the need to build stakeholder capacity for creating an immunization roadmap and understanding NIS costing tools. This initiative will aid Indonesia in preparing the NIS for 2025-2029 and integrating it into the national health sector plan, meeting global standards. The event hosted 68 participants, with 37 attending the training, including six international delegates from Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Timor-Leste. Facilitators comprised experts from WHO, UNICEF, and CHEPS UI, a national consultant.

During discussions, the need for a multipronged approach was emphasized, highlighting the importance of cross-sectoral engagement and local government leadership to address challenges in immunizing every child, especially in pockets of unvaccinated children. The kick-off event concluded with key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Health, signing a commitment to develop and implement the NIS. In the subsequent days, facilitators led participants through the NIS steps, structures, and objectives via panel presentations, group discussions, and hands-on practice with costing tools. Participants conducted real-world situation analyses based on their experiences and expertise, enhancing the discussions through cross-learning among national and international attendees. The event concluded with the core team establishing a timeline and task distribution to finalize the NIS document by the end of September 2024.
