PAHO online course to implement electronic immunization registries

One of the four principles of the Immunization Agenda 2030 (IA2030) is the use of good quality and adequate data. This principle is essential to monitor progress, optimize the performance of immunization programs, and lay the foundation so that people everywhere at all levels and ages benefit fully from vaccines for their health and well-being.

To align with IA2030, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) promotes the policy on "Reinvigorating immunization as a public good for universal health," which seeks to strengthen immunization programs in Member States by applying innovative approaches and best practices.

This policy emphasizes the importance of incorporating technological tools for data analysis to strengthen governance, improve coverage monitoring, and vaccine surveillance in immunization programs. In line with the above and as part of these efforts, PAHO's Special Program on Comprehensive Immunization (CIM) has published the e-learning course “Electronic Immunization Registry: Practical Considerations for Planning, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation" on PAHO's Virtual Campus for Public Health.

The Electronic Immunization Registry (EIR) has proven to be a key tool for optimizing immunization programs' coverage, management, and efficiency. These registries improve overall performance and provide a better experience for beneficiaries. In the Region of the Americas, 26 countries have implemented EIRs within their immunization programs, although many are still in the process of joining this digital transformation.

The self-learning course provides a comprehensive methodology to support immunization teams in planning and implementing EIRs. It is aimed at health professionals and technicians, administrative staff, health authorities, and all those involved in managing, analyzing, and monitoring immunization coverage. Participants can move through the modules at their own pace, regulating their time and dedication. Using EIRs promotes progress toward digital transformations in immunization and improves access to and quality of immunization services.
