South Sudan maps the path to the introduction of the pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine
South Sudan completed a comprehensive meningitis risk assessment to guide the introduction of the pentavalent meningococcal conjugate vaccine (Men5CV), a key milestone towards implementing the WHO Defeating Meningitis by 2030 roadmap.
Conducted by the Ministry of Health with support from WHO and partners, the assessment used the WHO Meningitis Risk Assessment Tool (MenRAT) to analyse surveillance, laboratory, immunization and humanitarian data.
The assessment identified continuing meningitis risks driven by recurrent outbreaks, population displacement, cross-border movement and health system challenges. Northern Bahr El Ghazal was identified as the highest-risk state, while Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Eastern Equatoria and Western Equatoria emerged as priority areas for action.
Based on the findings, stakeholders endorsed a preferred strategy that combines nationwide introduction of Men5CV into the routine immunization programme with a preventive vaccination campaign targeting eight high-risk states and administrative areas.
The assessment also highlighted the need to strengthen meningitis surveillance and laboratory capacity to support outbreak prevention and response. The findings will support national decision-making, NITAG deliberations and future applications for vaccine support, helping South Sudan advance towards more effective prevention and control of meningitis.
