State workshop to strengthen routine immunization in Telangana, India

Overview: The Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Telangana, organized a three-day residential workshop at Hyderabad, Telangana, with support from the New Vaccine Introduction (NVI) team, John Snow India. Telangana is a state in South India, formed in 2014 as India’s 29th state with 33 districts.
The workshop was conducted under the leadership of the Joint Director, Child Health and Immunization, Government of Telangana, and brought together key state and district government officials and various development partners, including WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, and JSI. The findings of a study conducted by JSI to document the best practices adopted by the government of Telangana for the successful introduction of the recent new vaccines (PCV & RVV) were disseminated at the workshop. A review of routine immunization activities and an orientation of the District Immunization Officers (DIOs) on the revised Medical Officer’s Routine Immunization Handbook was also undertaken. The Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Telangana, delivered the keynote address, and the Secretary to the Government of Telangana, Health, Medical and Family Welfare, delivered the valedictory note and presented certificates to all participants.
The technical sessions in the workshop focused on reviewing the immunization programme, strengthening micro plans, improving coverage of new vaccines (Rotavirus Vaccine and PCV) and other antigens, Electronic Data Management, and Vaccine and Cold Chain Management. Sixty-five district-level officials attended the workshop.
The workshop was a significant landmark in improving routine immunization coverage in Telangana, India.
