SUMMARY:Celebrating 20 years of a polio-free WHO European Region
DESCRIPTION:\n\nThe European Regional Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC) concluded in October 2022 that the WHO European Region has sustained its polio-free status for the 20th year. To mark this historic achievement, a press briefing and commemorative event were held at the UN City building in Copenhagen, Denmark, on World Polio Day (24 October 2022).\nAmong the speakers at the commemorative event, RCC Chair David Salisbury congratulated the Region for this achievement, Dr Marc Danzon recalled the tremendous efforts required to achieve the Region’s polio-free status in 2002, Ms Gerli Nielsen described her experience as a polio survivor and one of the many people who contracted the disease in the Region’s last large outbreak in Denmark in 1952. All speakers called for renewed commitment to sustain the Region’s polio-free status and Dr Hans Kluge stressed that immunization will remain a strategic priority for the WHO Regional Office for Europe, as reflected in the prominence given to the European Immunization Agenda 2030 as a flagship initiative of the European Programme of Work.\n\n\n\nRepresentatives of WHO, Rotary International, UNICEF Supply Division, USAID and Polio Denmark plant the seeds of a polio-free future (credit: Heather Saul WHO)\n\nThe full list of speakers:\nDr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe; Dr Marc Danzon, WHO Regional Director Emeritus; Ms Jennifer Jones, President, Rotary International; Dr Siddhartha Datta, Regional Advisor, Vaccine-preventable diseases and Immunization programme, WHO/Europe Representatives of the European Regional Commission for Certification of Poliomyelitis Eradication (RCC), WHO, Rotary International, UNICEF, Polio Denmark as well as diplomatic representatives of countries in the WHO European Region.\nFurther resources: WHO/Europe Press briefing on World Polio Day, 24 October 2022 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1K5v3B4EdHs\n\nPhoto (top): Press briefing attended by Dr Hans Kluge, WHO Regional Director; Ms Jennifer Jones, President, Rotary International; and Dr Siddhartha Datta, Regional Advisor, Vaccine-preventable diseases and Immunization programme, WHO/Europe (Credit: Heather Saul WHO)\n
