  • How are you addressing requests for non-legal name changes and/or gender change?
  • How do you address or at what age are youth able to request changes in the IIS for name or gender change?

The Minnesota Department of Health is seeking to update their current data request process. The goal of the project is to improve the data request process and use the information to consider additional external-facing data visualizations to reduce the number of data requests. Specifically, they are interested in learning about:

Process:

  • What is your data request process?
    • Do you have different processes for internal agency requests? If yes, what are they?
    • Do you have different processes for media requests? If yes, how are they handled?
  • Who completes the data extractions?
  • How do you manage data requests?
  • What information do capture for tracking data requests?
  • Does your IIS charge for data requests?
    • If yes, in what situations?

Implementation:

  • What application(s) do you use to manage data requests?
  • How many staff you have for fulfilling data requests?

AIRA’s membership video

At the end of the AIRA 2023 National Meeting, we unveiled a new video highlighting some of the many benefits an AIRA membership offers. Did you know that, as a member of AIRA, your entire organization could have access to peer collaboration, education, and resources on the development and implementation of IIS?

June ACIP meeting highlights

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met on June 21–23 to discuss RSV, polio, influenza, pneumococcal, dengue, chikungunya, mpox, meningococcal, and COVID-19 vaccines.

On the first day, ACIP voted in favor of recommending RSV vaccine for adults. Adults 60 years of age and older may receive a single dose of RSV vaccine, using shared clinical decision-making.

Over the course of the three-day meeting, the committee voted to approve the following:

AIRA board spotlight

The board spotlight provides AIRA staff and the IIS community the opportunity to get to know each AIRA board member. Every month, a new board member will be featured. This month, we are getting to know Melissa Mickle-Hope, the director of the Citywide Immunization Registry, the IIS for New York City.

What is one thing you would like to say to the IIS community?
Take advantage of new funding opportunities in IIS and data modernization to really plan for the future.

What’s your favorite part of being on the AIRA board?
Having a great support system. We’re all having the same issues, and we can give each other advice. That’s definitely the best part.

If you had a time machine, would you go back in time or into the future? Why?
I would go back to being 25. You’re in your prime! You have the whole world in front of you and your future ahead of you. I’d like to go back knowing everything I know now.

What’s one thing you have learned from an AIRA workgroup or committee?
It wasn’t a committee or workgroup, but at the AIRA National Meeting, I really took a lot away from Dr. Saundra Dalton Smith’s opening plenary about stress. I downloaded her book, Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity, and I’m doing a lot of those techniques. It’s really helping.

If you could be on a TV show, which one would you choose and why?
I’d be on “Price is Right” to win all the prizes!

Please share a person or experience that influenced your career in a positive way.
Amy Metroka was my predecessor and my mentor. She really encouraged me to work on the board.

What’s your favorite dessert?

The Latin dessert flan. I love it! I’m very particular about it—you have to do it properly.

Is there anything new your organization is working on/toward that you would like to share?
We’re working towards creating QR codes for the full immunization record. We are using everything we learned during COVID. It’s exciting!

Recap of June 2023 events

In June, AIRA staff traveled to attend several in-person events and worked hard to host another informational Discovery Session.

From June 12 to 15, the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and AIRA collaborated to hold the ninth annual IIS Leadership Workshop for new and emerging leaders across the immunization information systems (IIS) community. Twenty-one individuals from 17 jurisdictions gathered at the PHII offices in Decatur, Georgia, to discuss, among other topics, data quality, budgets and sustainability, procurements and contracting, staffing and workforce, and the role of the IIS leader. The workshop focused on providing high-level information on each topic, followed by links and information about resources across the community. To quote one participant, “Thank you for all the valuable tools and helpful resources. I am definitely keeping my workbook handy as well as implementing my work plan daily.”
