"EYE on yellow fever" - the EYE podcast is launched

EYE on Yellow Fever is a ten-part podcast series by the Eliminate Yellow Fever Epidemics (EYE) Strategy that takes you inside a concerted global effort to ensure that yellow fever does not become the next big global health threat.

We interview experts from all over the world on topics such as the history of yellow fever (YF), climate change and public health, and many others to show why YF is a disease that cannot be ignored.

Documentary: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) vaccination campaign, May 2021

Documentary: Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) vaccination campaign, Kinshasa, May 2021

In May this year, we sent a film crew to DRC to document the YF vaccination campaigns in Kinshasa and Tshopo. It was a partnership-wide effort to get supplies to the area, as well as to ensure that as many people could be vaccinated as possible, in a climate of vaccine hesitancy and severe logistical challenges.

The results were a concerted global and country effort to save more lives from this deadly disease. You can watch the film here.

Country Updates

2021 YF vaccination campaign in Gedarif - Sudan

2021 YF vaccination campaign in Gedarif, Sudan

Sudan

2020 / 2021 overview
Sudan completed its initial catch-up activities targeting missed cohorts of children in late 2020 in White Nile State, where 514,000 children were vaccinated achieving high administrative coverage.

This was followed in early 2021 in Kassala, Gedarif and Red Sea. The 2021 activities were also integrated with vaccination to protect against polio. These catch-up activities were completed in April, achieving high administrative coverage and protecting more than 1 million children (9 months to 7 years old).

In order to achieve equitable access to at-risk populations, Sudan also included newly-arrived refugees from Northern Ethiopia in a dual-antigen campaign (YF vaccine and oral cholera vaccine).

On 11th July 2021, YF vaccine was introduced into the routine immunization (RI) schedule in 15 out of the 18 states. The three remaining states are Red Sea, South Kordofan and Central Darfur, which were postponed due to security issues. These will resume as soon as safely possible.

Democratic Republic of Congo

As mentioned in last month’s newsletter, the yellow fever preventive mass vaccination campaigns (PMVCs) that have been completed so far have achieved a high level of coverage with over 15.5 million people protected. Equateur implementation is planned for later this year, seeking to target an additional 2.6 million people. Bloc 3 campaign is due to take place in November 2021.

Republic of Congo

Planning is underway for PMVCs in October 2021. The vaccination campaigns aim to target over 4 million people aged 9 months to 60 years old.

Nigeria

Nigeria has the largest scale campaigns planned for 2021. Approximately 29.1 million doses (MDs) will be used to target those eligible between the ages of 9 months and 44 years old. The campaigns are taking place in five states: Abia, Imo, Ebonyi (tailored approach dependant on security issues), Taraba and Borno. Several of these campaigns are planned as dual antigen activities combining YF and measles.

Ogun State is planned for October, which aims to target over 5 million people, accounting for 85% of the total population. This state will be integrated with measles’ campaigns.
