It is with great sadness that we inform you of the tragic death of our dear friend and colleague, Yves Chartier. Yves died in a snow-shoeing accident in the Jura mountains on Sunday 8 January 2012. Yves was known to many in WHO and beyond as a dedicated and caring professional, working in the Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Health (WSH) Unit in the Department of Public Health and Environment. Yves Chartier joined WHO in 2003 as a technical officer working on health care waste management and Legionella, after working around the world as Chief of mission for Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières). His technical work in WHO included emergency missions, most recently in Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake and cholera outbreak. Yves was also an active contributor to TechNet activities, he participated the last Technet meeting and was always ready to answer field queries related to logistics and health care waste disposal. But Yves was so much more than a good professional - he was a good man, a rare gem - warm, generous, sensitive, sensible but a rebel, anti conformist but with morals, serious but with a cheeky sense of humour, and a very acute sense of justice. Yves did not leave people indifferent, and people mattered a great deal to him. He helped people, not only through his work, but also in his personal life. Yves was a loyal friend and a family man - his wife, two sons and his broader family were all important to him. An email address has been set up to send messages to his family : Yves Chartier will be sorely missed… Jhilmil
