Ressource | Global Migration Group Handbook for improving the production and Use of Migration Data for Development |
---|---|
Objectif | To provide guidance to producers and users of international migration data. |
Contenu | This handbook has section headings on Key Concepts, Definitions, and Sources, Sources of Migration Statistics (population, administrative records, including border collection, and sample surveys) and Migration and Development. Ch 11 of the handbook provides an overview of health policy issues in relation to migrants. This includes responses adressing the underlying social determinants of migrants’ health outside the health sector and the barriers that prevent migrants from accessing quality health care services. |
Résultats attendus | More accurate population numbers on migration. Development of health policy more sensitive to migrant health issues including issues for refugees, internally displaced persons and stateless persons. |
Forces | (a) Better understanding of trends and outcomes through disaggregation and analysis of migrant health information. (b) Improved monitoring of migrants’ health-seeking behaviours and access to and utilization of health services. (c) Should also increase the collection of data on health status and outcomes for migrants. |
Contraintes/Limitations | (a) Censuses have several limitations in measuring international migration. (b) Serious privacy and ethical issues derive from the fact that the types of big data are mostly generated inadvertently by users. (c) Civil and birth registration may not be up to date. |
Pourquoi l'utiliser | (a) Provides guidance on trends and cross-country comparisons of disease burden attributable to vaccine preventable diseases. (b) To develop health policies more sensitive to needs of migrants (pro equity health policy) and also to update population denominators for health planning purposes. (c) Zero dose and under immunised – improved collection and use of migration data will promote more realistic population denominator estimates and provide an evidence base for pro equity health planning |
Qui devrait l'utiliser | National or sub national health system or program planners and policy makers, development partners and civil society.. |
