Strengthening maternal immunisation to improve the health of mothers and infants
The Millennium Development Goals, MDGs, have now been replaced by the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. The separation of countries into those that have reached MDG 4 (two thirds reduction in mortality of children under 5 years of age since 1990) and MDG 5 (75% reduction in maternal mortality since 1990), and those that have not, mask profound socioeconomic and geographical inequities between and within countries. The definition of countries into ‘have’ or ‘have not’ also hides the causes of the mortality reductions.
