Case study: Strengthening Ethiopia’s immunization supply chain through national and sub-national logistics working groups
Ethiopia has made significant strides in improving the performance and resilience of its immunization supply chain through the establishment and revitalization of National and Sub‑National Logistics Working Groups (NLWG/SNLWGs). These groups provide the governance backbone for coordinating planning, implementation, and monitoring across all levels of the system – linking the Ministry of Health (MOH), the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service (EPSS), Regional Health Bureaus (RHBs), development partners, and frontline health facilities. The 2025 global NLWG maturity assessment for immunization supply chain LWG categorized Ethiopia (focus was on EPSS-led NLWGs) as “Managed,” placing it among a small group of countries with well‑established and largely functional LWGs – demonstrating structured governance practices, institutionalization, and consistent multi‑stakeholder coordination.
