Misinformation: a strategic approach
This document summarizes a UNICEF-led webinar on strategically addressing vaccine misinformation, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. It explores the rise of misinformation and disinformation, their impact on vaccine uptake, and the psychology behind belief persistence. The presentation outlines the Vaccine Demand Observatory’s tools for social listening, rapid message testing, and capacity building for “infodemic managers.” Case studies from Pakistan demonstrate how social and behavioral data informed targeted interventions, counter-messaging, and community engagement to combat rumors and hesitancy. Strategies discussed include prebunking, debunking, amplifying trusted voices, and collaborating with journalists and influencers. The session emphasizes multifaceted, coordinated approaches that integrate data-driven insights with interpersonal communication to build trust, address hesitancy, and sustain demand for immunization.
