nOPV2 vaccine management in PNG_2025

This presentation summarizes Papua New Guinea’s experience in strengthening nOPV2 vaccine management during the 2025–2026 outbreak response. Across two campaign rounds, 146,460 vials were successfully distributed to all targeted provinces with timely logistics and no stock-outs at health facility level. A comprehensive vaccine management system was implemented, including standardized tools, real-time monitoring, and the deployment of Vaccine Accountability Monitors (VAMs).

Initial challenges in end-to-end accountability—particularly inconsistent use of tools and missing vial reporting—were systematically addressed through daily data review, on-the-job training, and supportive supervision. Final reconciliation confirmed a low missing vial rate of 1.92%, with full documentation and traceability to facility level.

A key achievement was the safe and complete destruction of 100% of unusable vials (91,942), supported by nationally endorsed waste management protocols.

PNG’s experience highlights the critical role of continuous supervision, real-time data use, and decentralized accountability mechanisms in closing system gaps. These lessons provide practical guidance for strengthening vaccine management in both outbreak response and routine immunization systems.
