RSV Vaccines Projected to Protect Infants and Seniors This Season

During the fall and winter, respiratory illnesses due to influenza virus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) spread widely and can cause severe illness, especially among vulnerable populations, including infants and older adults. Based on the latest projections from the RSV Scenario Modeling Hub, between July 2024 and June 2025, interventions are expected to avert up to 17% of RSV hospitalizations, relieving some of the pressure on a health system already burdened by higher-than-usual numbers of pertussis cases and respiratory tract infections due to Mycoplasma pneumonia, as well as seasonal epidemics of COVID-19 and influenza.

Global Analysis Reveals the Impact of PCV10 & PCV13 on Invasive Pneumococcal Disease

Last month, the PSERENADE Project released two landmark publications on the global impact of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCVs) on invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD). The study was conducted in collaboration with over 40 countries with PCV in their national immunization programs and included nearly all available high-quality data globally. "Our studies reveal that IPD caused by most serotypes targeted by PCV10 and PCV13 was nearly eliminated, although IPD due to remaining non-vaccine serotypes increased," explained Dr. Maria Deloria Knoll, Director of Epidemiology at IVAC. "Long-term use of these vaccines has reduced the global incidence of all IPD across all age groups, especially among young children, and new PCVs that target additional serotypes may further reduce IPD burden."

Explore the results in the following papers, both published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases
Authors include Julia Bennett, Maria Deloria Knoll, Maria Garcia Quesada, Marissa Hetrich, Yangyupei Yang, Laura Hammitt, Katherine O'Brien, and Kyla Hayford

Maintaining Immunizations for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases in a Changing World [Annual Review of Public Health]
By Anurima Baidya, Victoria Willens, Chizoba Wonodi, and William Moss

Despite the incredible achievements of immunization, including the eradication of smallpox and dramatic reductions in morbidity and mortality from diseases such as polio and measles, chronic barriers to achieving high vaccination coverage persist. This article provides a high-level overview of these longstanding obstacles as well as several new and emerging challenges faced by efforts to maintain and achieve immunization coverage. It also explores promising solutions at the individual, community, and global levels.

Economic Evaluation of Childhood Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccination Programs in Qinghai and Hainan Provinces, China [Expert Review of Vaccines]
By Haonan Zhang, Chaofan Wang, Haijun Zhang, Brian Wahl, Maria Deloria Knoll, Xiaozhen Lai, and Hai Fang

The authors of this study evaluated the health and economic impact of including PCV13 in provincial immunization programs in Qinghai and Hainan, two provinces with a relatively high burden of pneumococcal disease and where PCV13 is currently only available in the private market. Compared to the status quo, inclusion of PCV13 in immunization programs in Qinghai and Hainan would avert an additional 7,117 and 6,223 pneumococcal cases, respectively, along with an additional 118 and 66 deaths. These strategies would be cost-effective and potentially even cost-saving.
