POST 00439E : BIFURCATED NEEDLE NEEDLESTICK PROTECTION
24 MARCH 2002
__________________________________________________________________________
To Senior Decision Makers
The Federal Needlestick Safety and Prevention Act is a relatively new law
requiring all healthcare providers to evaluate and implement safer medical
devices under their OSHA "Exposure Control Plans". They must now adopt
safer devices to protect workers and others from needles potentially
contaminated with bloodborne pathogens such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C,
and HIV. In general, this "safer device" rule applies in the normal course
of operations, as well as in connection with any mass immunization program
authorized by the federal government.
The new safety rules that were effective on April 18, 2001 emphasize the
need for injection safety as being vital to health. As a world leader in
the prevention of diseases spread by accidental needlesticks and the reuse
of syringes, Univec is providing this information to educate the public and
key policymakers on the problems that may exist if safer medical devices
are not used.
Univec has been contributing to injection safety since introducing its
Auto-Disable Syringe over six years ago. We are currently at the forefront
of providing safer health products for patients and caregivers by
developing, assembling, licensing, and marketing safety syringes. Upon
request, we will be happy to provide samples, usage instructions, and other
information on Univec's Sliding Sheath safety syringes, which are
specifically designed to comply with the Needlestick law mandate.
As the World Health Organization says, remember "First Do No Harm." That is
our goal and concern as well. We hope that awareness of the Needlestick law
will lead to greater public safety for all our Nation's citizens in every
circumstance in which injections are required.
Please feel free to contact us at 1-800-211-1559 should you need any
additional information.
Sincerely,
Joel Schoenfeld
