POST 00882E : GLOBAL PLAN TO STOP TB 30 January 2006
_____________________________________
Last Friday 27 January 2006, at the World Economic Forum in Davos,
Switzerland, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, UK Chancellor of the
Exchequer Gordon Brown and Bill Gates called on world leaders to rally
behind a major new action plan to treat 50 million people and prevent 14
million tuberculosis deaths worldwide over the next ten years.
The Global Plan to Stop Tuberculosis (2006-2015) was released the same day
in Davos and at a series of media events around the world featuring a
number of high-profile individuals dedicated to a TB-free world, by the
Stop Tuberculosis Partnership, a coalition of more than 400 organizations
worldwide. It calls for global tuberculosis spending to triple over the
next decade to increase access to tuberculosis control programmes and
accelerate research on new tools to fight the disease.
The Global Plan is a comprehensive assessment of the action and resources
needed to implement the Stop TB strategy, to make an impact on the global
TB burden, and to reach the Stop TB Partnership's goals for 2015.
By 2015, a new vaccine, safe, effective and affordable will become
available. It will likely have a considerable impact on the future fight
against tuberculosis. Details of the plan however indicate that this new
vaccine is not going to replace the actual BCG vaccine but come as a
complement.
