Protecting Medical Workers in Guinea
With the onset of the Ebola epidemic, infectious waste posed an even more serious health risks to people that come in contact with it, in particular healthcare staff who are critical in containing the epidemic.
The technique used up to now in these hospitals was to gather and destroy at the back of the hospital the infected waste by burning it.
UNDP is deploying in Conakry autoclaves, that use pressurized steam at 134-135°C alternating with vacuum cycles to achieve high levels of sterilization.
Waste volumes have been growing exponentially, not only due to the rapid spread of the EBV and an increasing number of patients requiring care, but also because large quantities of personal protection equipment and disposable items being used by healthcare workers taking care of the sick and infected.
