MARCH 6, 2024

!--

Hello IIS Community,

This past month, AIRA attended several meetings, held a Discovery Session that drew over 200 registrants, and released an important AIRA 2024 National Meeting reminder. For those of you who missed it, there is one month remaining to register at the lowest rate, the early-bird special. Early-bird registration will close on Sunday, March 31. Visit our AIRA 2024 National Meeting website to register today!

Starting February off, Mary Beth Kurilo and I attended the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Reverse Site Visit on February 13–15 in Atlanta. CDC leadership, including Dr. Daskalakis, Dr. Peacock, Lynn Gibbs-Scharf, and many others shared their appreciation for the work of the IIS and immunization community as well as their vision for the important role of immunizations and data. Amidst the excitement of working as one team in support of improving public health, there were also weighty conversations about IIS sustainability and the need for creative approaches to funding as we strive to maintain our strong systems and high-quality data. As always, there were lots of wonderful connections reestablished across local, state, and federal partners as we all returned to CDC for the first gathering since January 2020.

The National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) met on February 22–23 and discussed an array of topics. The following themes were covered: surge in measles cases, vaccine pipeline and industry investment, building strong supply chains to prevent shortages, state policies for school entry, celebrating 30 years of the VFC program, artificial intelligence and how it’s used for vaccine development, and improving vaccination coverage among several demographics.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) convened February 28–29 to discuss COVID-19, chikungunya, diphtheria and tetanus (DT), influenza, polio, RSV for adults, meningococcal, pneumococcal, and combination vaccines. During the meeting, ACIP voted to recommend that persons 65 years of age and older who have already received a dose of the current COVID-19 vaccine should receive an additional dose of 2023-2024 Formula COVID-19 vaccine. ACIP also voted to recommend chikungunya vaccine for persons 18 years of age and older who are traveling to a country or territory where there is a chikungunya outbreak and laboratory workers with potential for exposure to chikungunya virus. Chikungunya vaccine may be considered for certain persons traveling to a country or territory without an outbreak but with evidence of chikungunya virus transmission among humans within the last five years. Two additional topics with impacts on IIS include seasonal influenza vaccine CVX codes for the 2024–2025 season and documenting fractional polio doses. Both will require additional conversations. A more in-depth summary of the February ACIP meeting and its impact on IIS will be distributed soon.

Register today for AIRA’s March Discovery Session on Monday, March 25 from 4 to 5 p.m. ET! Join us for a preview of the updated IIS Functional Standards.

CDC has engaged the Public Health Informatics Institute (PHII) and other members of the immunization information system (IIS) community to participate in a project to update the IIS Functional Standards. This effort is undertaken periodically to ensure the Functional Standards remain relevant and achievable in maintaining an effective, efficient, and scalable IIS.

During this session, you’ll hear about:

  • The project approach, objectives, and recommended changes
  • The 2024 Functional Standards, expected to be released in the near future

There will be time for questions and answers at the end of the webinar.

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email which contains links to add the meeting to your calendar. If you’re unable to attend, this session will be recorded and available in the AIRA repository.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and their IIS team would like to hear from other jurisdictions that have monetized their HEDIS process, specifically about the approval process and the process that put that fee structure in place. Additionally, they are interested in understanding how other IIS handle the fee submissions and any responses/pushback received from health plans once the process was put in place.

The New York City Department of Health and Human Mental Hygiene’s Citywide Immunization Registry (CIR) has grown in breadth and scope, and so has the need for a centralized resource hub for its new and existing users. They are looking to build a comprehensive training library, or learning management system, that would be housed within their registry, serving as a ‘one-stop shop’ for everything CIR related. Additionally, they are interested in finding out what software other jurisdictions use to create user-friendly training videos. Their team would love to connect with other jurisdictions that have established training libraries to demo their products and environment.
