AIRA Weekly Update | September 6, 2023

SEPTEMBER 6, 2023

Greetings,

Fall has arrived! Whether you are a pumpkin spice fan or prefer apple cider, fall is a wonderful time of year. As the weather begins to cool and the leaves begin to turn colors, it’s the perfect time to embrace change. I hope you find some time to reflect upon this current year (we are already three quarters of the way through!) and plan for what’s to come. At AIRA, we’ve been taking some time to reflect, embrace, and plan for the coming season.

This past month, AIRA hosted a Discovery Session featuring the Public Health Informatics Institute’s (PHII) Workforce Development and Technical Assistance Resources. Thank you, PHII, for sharing your new and updated resources. If you haven’t already done so, mark your calendars for the next Discovery Session on Monday, September 18, from 4 to 5 p.m. ET. During this session, our subject matter experts will guide you through a tour of AIRA’s recently developed resources.

Our Publication Project Workgroup (PPW) has launched a group email tool that allows individuals to ask subject matter experts questions regarding the publication process. If you need support moving your IIS-related projects from practice into publication, don’t hesitate to reach out to Cette adresse e-mail est protégée contre les robots spammeurs. Last month, Nathan Bunker, senior technical project manager, traveled to Chile for the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) Meeting. Not only did he participate in roundtable discussions and listen to several informational presentations, but he also gave a phenomenal presentation (in Spanish!) introducing AIRA, M&I, and Data-at-Rest. Thank you, Nathan, for representing AIRA in Chile!

Last but certainly not least, on August 23, the AIRA board election results were announced. Congratulations to David Mattiko, Jeff Chorath, John Robison, and Mike Berry as they join the AIRA board! We are looking forward to integrating your various experiences and expertise to help propel AIRA forward. September marks the final board meeting of the 2022–2023 board year. I want to sincerely thank our outgoing board president, Mary Woinarowicz, governance chair, Dave McCormick, and director, Stephen White. Over the past few years, these directors and officers have invested a lot of time, effort, and passion into AIRA's future. Thank you!

Wishing everyone a happy fall!

Rebecca Coyle, MSEd

Executive Director

The Connecticut Department of Public Health IIS is inquiring about methods other jurisdictions have used, successfully or unsuccessfully, to identify change of address for adults and children in their IIS (within and beyond the jurisdiction). They are considering the USPS National Change of Address (NCOA) data set, as recommended in the AIRA Patient Status in Immunization Information Systems resource, to obtain the most accurate and up-to-date addresses. They would like to hear about this or other methods, and are interested in aspects including matching, data security, interface with the IIS, and cost.

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services IIS is interested in learning from other jurisdictions about charging health care payers for HEDIS data and reports. Michigan hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the structures and management of these programs, as well as their advantages and challenges. This information will be used to help identify additional ways to financially support their IIS.
