NOTE :
You are reminded that there is just one week left for participating in the
TechNet annual survey. It is very easy and will take just a few minutes of
your time. You are thus invited to do so by clicking on the following link:
http://www.technet21.org/Survey03.html
Fill the questionnaire and then click on the "Submit" zone at the bottom
right.

The TechNet21 website has also been updated to present a new "Best
Practice" and "Travel Quiz". The latter is proposed by Kohl with a
magnificent picture. We are starting a new type of travel quiz asking
you to identify not a geographical location but a cultural area association
"What is this?" If you can also tell where this is in particular, even
better but not necessary. Good luck!

Yves Chartier (mailto:[log in to unmask]) from WHO is reminding us of an
existing WHO document published in 1999 : "Guidelines for Safe Disposal of
Unwanted Pharmaceuticals in and after emergencies", dealing with the
destruction of unwanted pharmaceuticals (see his message below). This
is a very useful and credible document but it leaves many question unanswered
because it doesn't deal specifically with the vaccine issue. Actually, the
word vaccine is written only once in the whole document on page 18 (3.5.
Expired Pharmaceuticals).
The document is divided into four main parts :
1. Introduction
2. Disposal methods
3. Sorting categories
4. Recommended disposal methods by sorting category
It is relatively difficult to extract parts of the document for those
who may not read it in full and still wish to reach conclusions. It wouldn't do
justice to the effort of putting together these guidelines. However these
following paragraphs throw further light on previous discussions on the topic.
>
-------------------------------------------
So what should be concluded? Are expired or frozen vaccines
"Pharmaceuticals with no or low toxicity... that can be classed as readily
biodegradable organic material"? What scientific information do we have on
this? Should we just flush them
into the sewers?
You will find the document attached.

Yves' message:
While reviewing the documents sent by Umit and what I had on my side
think the attached Guidelines for safe disposal of unwanted pharmaceuticals
in and after emergencies integrate the small pieces of text we have.
I would think that on that particular issue of vaccine destruction...
we should recommend that guideline which is also a WHO 1999 publication
and is still up-to-date in my sens.
