POST 01029E : USE OF ETHANOL FOR VACCINE INJECTIONS
Follow-up on Post 01029E

Only one contribution was received so far following Jedeth Mamora's
question, from Anil Varshney (mailto:[email protected]) from
India. I couldn't find much information on the topic but I thought
that use of alcohol was contra-indicated in the case of live
attenuated vaccines. Has anyone got precise up-to-date information?

This practice is common for many years for all injection so as to
sterlize the skin area before injection be it IV IM ID SC, and is
being followed in small clinic to large hospitals for immunization.
It's important that the site is clean and which could even be done
with plain water.
Use of alcohol hardens the skin. It is unlikely to have any effect on
vaccine efficacy as the vaccine is injected in the body and alcohol
is on the skin surface.
After application, wait for it to dry before injecting. The practice
is more to ensure that the skin is clean.
Dr Anil Varshney,
India
