POST 01212E : TT SCHOOL VACCINATION 3 January 2008 ___________________________ It is with some trepidation and considerable eagerness that one takes over the reins from Claude Letarte, who has brought to his moderation a great degree of balance, dynamism and domain expertise. We take the baton from him at a crucial time, when the website and e-forum have stabilised and it is time to explore new ideas. Our efforts will be directed towards making this forum a seminal resource for all those working with immunization. Unfortunately, we have had to suspend the French postings in trying to keep things viable. But those of you are more comfortable sending contributions in French can continue to do so. Let us usher in the new year with the hope it is one in which the world will know less strife; one in which conservation efforts will receive greater thrust. We also hope that our immunization network will grow stronger in its efforts to reduce infant, child and maternal mortality. ----------------------- We have two documents on the introduction of the tetanus vaccines in schools. The first is an excerpt from Disease Control Priorities in Developing Countries: OUP (1993) by Steinglass et al. The second is a presentation, prepared by Dr E. Araya, WHO/Asmara, which shows how Eritrea has fairly successfully implemented its school-based tetanus programme along with clinic-based coverage. The programme is funded by the EPI and has roped in school headmasters to ensure comprehensive coverage so that girls are protected even before they enter the child-bearing years. Thank you once again.
