Ressource Assessing and Improving the Accuracy of Target Population Estimates for Immunization Coverage
Objectif Provides a systematic approach to assessing and improving the accuracy of target population estimates.
Contenu Outlines a 9 step process that includes comparison of the current national annual estimates of births used by the EPI with estimates from one or more alternative sources, calculation of annual growth rates, comparison of national numbers of births with sums of numbers of births over all subnational areas, and carrying out one or more graphical trend analyses.
Résultats attendus Assessment used for development of more accurate population denominator.
Forces Implementing assessments of population denominators increases confidence in the administrative coverage estimates and facilitates the identification, quantification and monitoring of unvaccinated and incompletely vaccinated children.
Contraintes/Limitations Immunization programmes will preferably obtain target population estimates from the country's national statistical system, with no room for validation and adjustments of the estimates for programme monitoring. Few EPI programmes have the expertise and resources needed to validate and adjust population estimates independently.
Pourquoi l'utiliser (a) As coverage increases, administrative coverage estimates become increasingly sensitive to errors in target population estimates (denominator). To accurately monitor program performance and progress in reaching under-served population groups, it is critical to have accurate population denominators.
(b) Zero dose and under immunised - Detection of inaccuracy in denominators could improve equity by providing a rationale for detecting and including underserved populations.
Qui devrait l'utiliser National Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) managers and their staff, by staff at the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters and regional offices who provide technical support to national EPI programmes; persons concerned with the accuracy of target population estimates, nationally, regionally, and/or globally.
