Building resiliency in immunization programs in the time of COVID-19 recovery

This presentation, part of the 2022 Comprehensive Training hosted by GAVI, WHO, UNICEF, and the US CDC, outlines strategies to recover and strengthen immunization programs in the wake of COVID-19 disruptions. The pandemic caused a significant drop in routine vaccination coverage, leading to millions of under- and unvaccinated children, delays in vaccine introductions, and increased risk of outbreaks, particularly for measles and other preventable diseases. It emphasizes “building back better” by closing immunity gaps, reviving postponed campaigns, integrating catch-up vaccinations, and targeting zero-dose children. Key strategies include leveraging COVID-19 vaccination infrastructure, improving disease surveillance, addressing equity gaps, and enhancing service delivery through integrated, life-course immunization approaches. Examples from various countries show the value of combining campaigns, engaging communities, and using data-driven decision-making. The overall goal is to create resilient, equitable immunization systems that sustain high coverage and protect against future health threats.
