Annex A07. Evaluating the Use of RT-qPCR Alone for Discarding Measles Cases: A Review of Current Evidence and Global Practices

This paper evaluates the feasibility of using RT-qPCR as the sole diagnostic method for discarding suspected measles cases, replacing traditional IgM serology. Drawing on global data, laboratory practices, and diagnostic performance metrics, we assess the sensitivity, specificity, and operational implications of a PCR-only approach. We conclude with a proposal for updated diagnostic criteria and highlight the need for further data to support policy changes.
