Elevating CHWs’ Role in Immunization – The Key to Equitable Access and Increased Demand
This brief highlights the critical role of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in expanding equitable access to immunization services across low- and middle-income countries. VillageReach demonstrates how CHWs—trusted, community-based health providers—can effectively support vaccine planning, outreach, administration, and follow-up when equipped with the right tools, training and supervision. Through initiatives in Malawi, Mozambique, and the DRC, CHWs have contributed to significant improvements in vaccine coverage and reduced dropout rates. The brief calls for increased investment in CHWs as vaccinators, emphasizing their cost-effectiveness, impact and potential to close immunization gaps in under-reached communities. This brief is built off the Community Health Impact Coalition (CHIC) Immunization Brief https://joinchic.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/09/CHIC-Donor-Evidence-Brief-2025.pdf which highlights six keyways to expand CHW’s role in immunization service delivery.
