1.1 Guide for introducing a malaria vaccine into national immunization programmes (draft)

The purpose of this guide is to summarize current global recommendations and implementation considerations for the vaccination of children living in malaria-endemic areas. The guide aims to support immunization programme decision-makers and managers, immunization partners and stakeholders, and national malaria programmes considering or planning a malaria vaccine introduction.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends two prequalified malaria vaccines for use: RTS,S/AS01 and R21/Matrix-M. The guide outlines:

  • key considerations for country decision-making and roll-out of the malaria vaccines based on global recommendations and pilot implementation experience (including lessons learned from the malaria vaccine pilot countries – Ghana, Kenya and Malawi);
  • the need for collaboration between the national immunization programme and malaria programme, and the role of malaria vaccines among other preventive measures as part of a comprehensive malaria control strategy; and
  • ways in which malaria vaccination strategies can be planned, communicated, delivered, integrated with other health services and monitored.
