The immunity boost: the essential role of DTP-containing vaccine boosters

The primary series of three doses of DTP-containing vaccine (DTPcv) for infants is given in the first six months of life, most commonly as a combination Pentavalent or Hexavalent vaccine.
However, vaccine-induced immunity following the primary series wanes with time. To maintain protection, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends three additional doses of vaccines against diphtheria and tetanus to boost protection and at least one booster against pertussis, following the primary DTPcv series.
