Lessons from the MVIP: Roles and responsibilities of EPI/NMCP (Information note)
The WHO-coordinated Malaria Vaccine Implementation Programme (MVIP) generated lessons on the roles and responsibilities of the National Immunization Programme (NIP) and the National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) to support the successful introduction of the malaria vaccine. The Ministries of Health (MOH) in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi implemented the MVIP from 2019 to 2023. Within the MOH, the NIP led the malaria vaccine introduction in close collaboration with the NMCP and with support from other key stakeholders.
The pilots have provided valuable experience and lessons on collaboration between the NIP and NMCP, which contributed to the successful implementation of the malaria vaccine. These lessons learned may help other countries as they prepare to introduce malaria vaccines.
