FEBRUARY 7, 2024

Greetings,

AIRA started the year off by gathering in Orlando, Florida, for our in-person staff meeting, providing much needed time to collaborate, learn, and serve together. Every year AIRA dedicates time to volunteer at a local nonprofit organization. This year, we had the pleasure of volunteering with Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida and helped sort 5,796 pounds of goods.

It wasn’t long after that, we hosted our first Discovery Session of the year. Thank you so much to all of you who joined us!

In case you missed it, the keynote speaker for the AIRA 2024 National Meeting was announced. We are thrilled to have Rachel Montañez, a recognized career and burnout expert, join us this year. You can learn more about Rachel by visiting our National Meeting website.

Lastly, please join me in congratulating the Publication Project Workgroup (PPW) on the recently published article, “Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on IIS Operations, Performance, and Future Readiness: Not the New Normal,” in the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice.

The Nevada State Immunization Program would like to hear from other jurisdictions that have permanent IIS data quality positions. What have you been able to accomplish that you couldn’t have done without them? How have their contributions positively impacted your immunization program and/or your community/jurisdiction?

The Kentucky Department of Public Health has a concern regarding reporting Vivotif (typhoid vaccine) to their immunization registry. Because this vaccine is self-administered orally via four doses over a seven-day period, the pharmacist did not select the “administered” option when documenting in its pharmacy system, as the pharmacy itself did not administer the medication; it only dispensed it. The pharmacist stated that, since the patient leaves with the medication to take as self-administered, the pharmacy does not think it should select “administer” and attest to administering the vaccine when no one at the pharmacy did so. The pharmacy technically does not know if the patient will in fact take the medication as prescribed, so it does not feel comfortable reporting to the state that it administered the immunization. They would like to hear from any IIS regarding methods, policies, and/or other helpful information on navigating this unique challenge.

AIRA’s Publication Project Workgroup Publishes Commentary in Journal of Public Health Management and Practice

Several members of AIRA’s Publication Project Workgroup (PPW) recently published an article titled “Implications of the COVID-19 Pandemic on IIS Operations, Performance, and Future Readiness: Not the New Normal” in the March/April edition of the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice.

An excerpt from the article appears below.

Looking ahead, the lessons learned by IIS during the COVID-19 pandemic should be applied toward readiness for future pandemics and will serve as a blueprint where rapid, large population data assessments are needed. The challenge will be finding a balance between these new lessons and the ongoing need for quality support of routine immunizations. For now, data quality needs and the IIS processes for ensuring data quality should be considered a priority above processes that focus on reporting IIS contents on a day-to-day basis. Intelligent planning for IIS data usage should include data quality needs as well as a consideration of what IIS population data are actually useful for long-term public health planning. Frequent and rapid reporting may have little utility in comparison to purpose-driven, and slower, reporting of meaningful immunization data on a population level for routine immunizations.

Congratulations to Kevin Dombkowski, Noam Arzt, and Steve Robison on their publication!

Need help publishing?

Launched in 2022, AIRA’s PPW aims to foster an increase in publication of peer-reviewed IIS-related articles. As part of this effort, AIRA created a “collegial queries” email address, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. You can send publication-related questions to this email address, and subject matter experts (SMEs) from the PPW will respond. Any publication-related questions are welcome.

New M&I Reports for Q4 2023

IIS can access their individual Measurement and Improvement (M&I) Assessment and updated Validation reports for the fourth quarter of 2023 (October–December) in the Aggregate Analysis Reporting Tool (AART). AIRA has adapted its Validation certificate issuance process so that jurisdictions now receive M&I Validation certificates directly to the email address associated with the contact listed as their AART admin user. As a reminder, jurisdictions can update their AART settings and users at any time following the steps outlined here.

Aggregate Assessment and Validation Summary reports for M&I content areas Submission/Acknowledgment, Query/Response, Data Quality Incoming/Ongoing, and Clinical Decision Support have also been updated for the IIS community and can be accessed on AIRA’s repository here.

Looking to improve your M&I results? Submit a technical assistance request to get the conversation started with a member of AIRA’s Standards and Analytics team.
