National IG Release 1.6: Call for experts, influencers, and advisors

CDC, in collaboration with AIRA and NIST, is launching an Implementation Guide Expert Group in late spring 2023 to facilitate and contribute to the development of the national Release 1.6 of the Implementation Guide (IG) for Immunization Messaging, initially published in 2014 and updated in 2018. The National IG provides standards for electronic immunization data exchange between IIS and different systems, and IIS leverage its guidance to publish local IGs.

Immunization community and IT professionals with HL7/IIS technical and immunization program subject matter expertise are invited to join the IG Expert Group to shape the next release via monthly one-hour project meetings, independent document review and feedback, and facilitated discussion with national, regional, and state partners in topic-focused small groups.

What has the Publication Project Workgroup (PPW) been up to?

To foster increased publication of peer-reviewed IIS-related research, AIRA’s Publication Project Workgroup (PPW) supports the publication of peer-reviewed articles focusing on IIS-related content.

A small workgroup of subject matter experts meets monthly to identify, prioritize, and outline key themes, messages, and articles for journal publication. The PPW has been busy in 2023!

Current activities include:

  • Preparing for the National Meeting Breakout Session titled “From Presentation to Publication: Advice from the AIRA Publication Workgroup”
  • Drafting a commentary on the role of IIS in pandemic response and the impact COVID-19 had on the maturity of IIS
  • Discussing ways to serve the IIS community, including peer support for IIS-related research (stay tuned for more details!)

If you are attending #AIRA2023, be sure to check out the PPW’s breakout session or connect with a PPW member to discuss current IIS-related projects on your plate.

Washington State Department of Health is interested in learning more about requirements for authorizing access to the IIS. In Washington state, any facility wanting access to the IIS is required to sign an information sharing agreement (ISA). There are two signature blocks for the ISA. The first one is for the authorized representative of the organization. The second one is for a licensed medical provider. For the latter, they are currently redefining which licensed providers have the qualifications to sign the agreement. Washington state would like to know if other states require a licensed medical provider to sign an agreement to gain IIS access and, if so, what guidelines are in place.

If you are willing to share information, please reach out to the Washington State Health Department and This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by Wednesday, April 5 and don’t forget to include your contact information for follow-up.
