Recent developments on catch-up campaigns in Sudan

Gavi has provided exceptional approval for Sudan's request to mount a yellow fever (YF) catch up campaign to reach the children missed due to delays between the preventive mass vaccination campaign (PMVC) and routine introduction, caused by supply disruptions at the time.

Sudan requested for support to protect ~4.4 million children and plans to implement the campaign in coordination with the introduction of YF in their routine immunization, which has already been approved. This presents a critical milestone in ongoing efforts to close immunity gaps and prevent outbreaks.

Impact of COVID-19 on YF immunization activities

The current COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented global health emergency that has wide-ranging impact on health services and public health programmes, including YF. In solidarity with the COVID-19 response, the EYE Secretariat is working with countries and partners to maintain support for COVID-19 prevention goals and advocate for safe and timely YF outbreak detection and control.

EYE Strategy partners continue to provide ongoing support to countries, while highlighting the importance of risk mitigation. YF is a high-threat, high-impact vaccine preventable disease. Continuing outbreak detection and control remains critical and will be aligned to WHO interim guidance for the COVID context. WHO and the EYE Secretariat remain available to support countries with any queries on YF immunization, in alignment with guidance from WHO / Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE).

To that extent, WHO has published guiding principles for immunization activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently developing specific operational guidance for conducting mass vaccination campaigns in the COVID-19 context. When conditions permit, the EYE Strategy will support rapid resumption of preventive YF activities according to WHO guidance.

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance is also taking new steps to help strengthen the preparedness of health systems. Countries that qualify for Gavi support will be able to quickly reallocate up to 10% of grants extended to them under Gavi’s health system and immunization strengthening programme to respond to the threat posed by COVID-19. The EYE Secretariat takes this opportunity to wish you and your families the best possible health and well-being in these complex times.
