During 2020, 23 million children did not receive essential vaccines through routine immunization services. In Africa, 7.7 million children missed out on vital first doses of routine immunizations, putting them at risk of developing vaccine-preventable diseases like measles, diphtheria, and polio. In hard-to-reach communities with little or no access to basic health care services, this disruption in immunization could result in disease outbreaks, and an increase in child mortality caused by vaccine-preventable diseases. We cannot slide backward on delivering vaccines that save children’s lives.
